May is GBS/CIDP Awareness Month

Each May, Health Canada proclaims May as GBS/CIDP Awareness Month. These rare neurological disorders can affect anyone, yet many people have never heard of them. By spreading awareness, we help improve early diagnosis, access to treatment, and support for those affected.

Join us in shining a light on GBS and CIDP this month—whether by attending a landmark lighting, securing a proclamation in your city, or spreading the word in your community.

Proclamations

Each year, we encourage our community of patients, family members and volunteers to join us in bringing GBS/CIDP awareness month to their city with proclamations! It’s thanks to all of you that these conditions are beginning to get the recognition they deserve.

What are proclamations?

Proclamations are an official declaration signed by the mayor on behalf of City Council, that officially recognize the importance of an event, a campaign, or an organization of significance, interest or benefit to the citizens of each city for a particular day, week or month. Your council will discuss each proclamation request then vote. The proclamation will then become a permanent part of your council’s minutes. All of these actions create awareness. Which in turn helps every GBS, CIDP, MMN and variants family.

Illuminations

Light it up for our rare neurological conditions!

The Light It Up campaign encourages cities across Canada to illuminate landmarks in blue for GBS/CIDP Awareness Month (May) to raise awareness for these rare conditions. Our goal is to have a different landmark lit up throughout the month, helping to shine a spotlight on GBS and CIDP.

We also Light It Up for MMN each February!

Why illuminations matter

Each lighting event helps raise public awareness for GBS/CIDP, bringing communities together. It’s a chance to visit local landmarks, share personal stories, and engage others in the conversation.

More visibility = more awareness = better outcomes for future patients.

How can you participate?
